Japanese Nintendo Switch 2: Region Lock, Language and Import Guide
In 2025, Nintendo introduced a cheaper, region-locked, Japan-only version of the Nintendo Switch 2.
For years, importing Nintendo Switch games from Japan has been relatively straightforward. However, things became a little more complicated with the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2.
Nintendo introduced Japanese-Language System (Japan-Only Model), a lower-priced version of the Nintendo Switch 2 intended for the Japanese market. The goal is to keep the console more affordable for local consumers. It may also help reduce overseas demand, where resellers and scalpers can take advantage of the regional price differences.
While the lower price makes it attractive, the model also comes with several restrictions that international collectors should be aware of before importing.
Presently, there are two versions of the Nintendo Switch 2 being sold in Japan: the Multi-Language System (Global Model) and the Japanese-Language System (Japan-Only Model).
The Global Model and its physical game cards are generally not region-locked. This means most games from different regions can be played on the system without any modifications.
Region-lock concerns only become relevant if you are purchasing the Japan-Only Model. It is a much more complicated story and here are a few additional restrictions and account-related differences worth knowing about.
Is Nintendo Switch 2 Consoles Region-Locked?
As mentioned earlier, the standard versions of the Nintendo Switch 2 and physical game cards are generally not region-locked. This means most games from different regions can still be played on the system without any modification.

Region-lock issues will only be a concern to you if you have the Japan-Only Model which is widely sold through official Japanese channels in Japan. This version is offered to the Japanese locals and residents at a lower price point but comes with regional limitations designed for the domestic market.
What Makes the Japan-only Nintendo Switch 2 Different?
The Japanese-market Nintendo Switch 2 is primarily intended for users in Japan. While it can still run physical game cartridges from other regions, the system interface is locked to Japanese language only. This means the menus, system settings and prompts are not available in other languages and it can be a problem to non-Japanese speakers.
One of the biggest reasons collectors consider the Japan-Only Model is its lower price. It is approximately ยฅ10,000 cheaper than the Global Model sold in Japan.
Another major difference involves the Nintendo eShop and digital content. Nintendo eShop purchases, downloadable content (DLC) and certain online features are usually tied to the region of your Nintendo Account rather than the console itself.
This means your access to digital games and content may vary depending on how your account is set up but this particular Japan-Only Model is strictly region-locked to Japanese Nintendo Accounts, requires Japanese payment methods for the eShop and is Japanese-language only.
On the official Japan Nintendo Store, many game titles were explicitly labelled as “Nintendo Switch 2๏ผๆฅๆฌ่ชใปๅฝๅ ๅฐ็จ๏ผใงใฏๆฅๆฌ่ชใงใฎใฟ้ในใพใใใใ ใใไธ้จใใฝใใๅ ใง่จ่ชใๅคๆดใงใใๅ ดๅใใใใพใใ” which translates to “On the Nintendo Switch 2 (Japanese version, Japan only), you can only play in Japanese. However, in some cases, you may be able to change the language within the software.”
Therefore, the Japan-Only Model comes with additional account and eShop considerations that may affect people living outside Japan.
Should Import Gamers Be Concerned?
For most collectors and import gamers, this model is unlikely to be a common concern, as it is rarely encountered outside Japan. However, itโs important to understand the differences before importing, especially if you rely on English system menus or plan to use multiple Nintendo Account regions. As with all Nintendo hardware, understanding both physical and digital ecosystem rules will help avoid unexpected limitations when building an import collection.

Ultimately, the choice is yours but we generally recommend the standard Nintendo Switch 2 that can purchased in your local market over the Japan-Only Model.
While the lower price is certainly attractive, the Japanese-language interface and account-related restrictions can create unnecessary friction for international gamers. In our view, the savings rarely outweigh the added inconvenience.
